7 Ways to Wear a Sarong

Your vacation is getting closer, the suitcase is open, the outfits are piling up, and somehow it already feels too full. I’ve been there. And every single time, the same thing saves me: a sarong.

It’s light, it takes almost no space, and it works harder than most pieces you’ll pack. One simple wrap can be your skirt, your dress, your blanket, or even your rescue plan on a windy beach. Honestly, once you travel with a sarong, you’ll never look at your suitcase the same way again.

Here are seven ways I’ve worn mine (and yes, you’ll probably invent a few more along the way).

1. The Simple Wrap Skirt

Sometimes the easiest look is the best one. Wrap it around your waist, tie a quick side knot, and you’re done. It’s the piece you grab when you’re sandy, sun-kissed, and just want to stroll into the café without changing.

2. The Tube Dress

I’ve pulled this trick more than once when I wanted a little more coverage. Wrap the sarong around your chest, tie it at the front, and suddenly you’ve got a strapless dress. It’s casual, feminine, and takes you from beach to brunch in seconds.

3. The One-Shoulder Dress

If you like a little drama (and who doesn’t on vacation?), drape the sarong across your body and tie it over one shoulder. It looks like you spent hours planning, when in reality it took less than a minute.

4. The Halter Dress

Cross the top corners in front and tie them behind your neck. It becomes a halter dress that feels playful and flattering. I’ve worn mine like this, with simple sandals, and looked more dressed up than I expected.

5. The Scarf or Shawl

Evenings can surprise you with a breeze. That’s when I throw my sarong over my shoulders. It adds color, warmth, and a little elegance, especially when you don’t want to drag a cardigan around.

6. The Head Wrap

Fold it into a triangle and tie it around your head. Shorter sarongs work best, but any will do in a pinch. It keeps your hair in place, saving you from too much sun, and adds a fun, bohemian vibe.

7. The Beach Blanket

Lay it flat, and you’ve got your spot on the sand. No heavy towels, no fuss. When it’s time to leave, shake it off and roll it back into your bag. Easy.

Why I Always Pack More Than One

The truth? One sarong is never enough. Each print or color tells a different story, and once you see how many ways you can wear them, you’ll want options. Hand-painted, tie-dye, or bold brights… It’s not just about packing light, it’s about packing smart.
